Lo Stelvio, come ben dice Monteforte nell'introduzione al libretto della Banca Popolare di Sondrio sul Museo Donegani, non è mai stata una montagna da contemplare, ma sempre una montagna da vivere. E intensamente, visto il periodo storico piuttosto breve: due secoli soltanto!
Si comincia negli anni '20 del XIX secolo con la costruzione delle celebre strada "che ha imbrigliato il gigante avvitandosi come un immenso serpente lungo i suoi versanti e lo ha reso docile all'uomo, alla sua vita, ai suoi furori, alle sue follie. Da allora la strada è stata la vena jugulare di questa montagna, entro cui non ha mai smesso un attimo di pulsare la storia, quella piccola e quitidiana dei "rotteri", quella festiva ed estiva del turismo e del loisir, quella epica del ciclismo, quella grande e terribile della guerra" (Franco Monteforte).
Stelvio The Stelvio has never been a mountain of contemplation, but always a mountain to live on. Live on intensly, considering the relatively brief historical period: only two centuries only! It all started in the 20s of the 19th Century with the building of the famous road that has become the jugular vein of this mountain, within which history has never ceased pulsating, the minor history of the “rotteri”, and the festive and summer history of tourism and of the loisir, and the epic history of competitive cycing together with the tragic events of war.
